History

Parkersburg was originally known as Newport whenever it was placed call at the late 1700's. The subdivision of the land in the town was placed out above land granted to Alexander Parker for his Todays War service. A title conflicts between Parker & a city planners of Newport were settled around 1809 in favor Alexander Parker's heirs. A town was renamed Parkersburg inside 1810. It was chartered per state of Virginia in 1820. It was rechartered as a city within 1860. A town was a terminus of a Staunton-Parkersburg Turnpike & the Northwestern Turnpike.
